The Bear Went Over The Mountain

  1. FYI: the Bear did NOT get her food bag! One might deduce that from her comment about her eating her oatmeal later, but that would be easy to overlook, too.

  2. You are so brave! A bear and rattlesnakes! Prayers for your safety. I admire you and your efforts. It has been a rainy spring into summer, yet you are persevering through it all. Keep going! Love reading your posts and living vicariously through them.

    1. Yes. You are not supposed to eat in your tent because it can keep the scent of food in the fabric. I don’t do it in the evening. In the morning, I’m just going to pack up the tent and leave so it doesn’t matter. I’m curious to know if the family was storing food in the tent. The hats why we hang our food bags in a tree. Bears have keen noses, as evidenced by the one that was going after my properly hung food bag. The problem is when bears start coming into campsites because they have been fed or have found food remnants or trash in fire rings. The bears learn it’s an easy source of food.

  3. So glad you kept your food and bag. What a way to wake up! I would have been saying a lot of prayers, too. I’m praying for your safe passage as the weather heats up and the woods critters become more apparent.

    1. Thank you, Sookie. That means a lot to me. I wish I had slowed down a bit, and had taken the time to enjoy the people I met AND the hike. I would have liked getting to know you better. My husband always tells me everything happens for a reason and as God intends, though. I try not to regret the past.I hear there is a trail up there in MN…have a friend from there. Maybe we can plan a hike up there if you have some time off.

      1. Lots of trails up here. I just wanted to let you know we had a rainfall that was 4”. It should reach the AT in two to three days. Hopefully will be North of you. Stay safe out there and ir any river looks to dangerous to cross, trust your instincts. Storm went through MN 6/17 and WI today. It has washed out roads here. Many Prayers for all of you on the trail.

  4. Hi Kara! So I got rid of my Facebook months ago because I don’t trust it, but then I went on it to check something or other and saw that you are on the trail again & I’m so excited for you & to follow along! Please know I’m available if you need anything up here in Massachusetts! I live about an hour from the trail in the Berkshires and my MiL & SiL both live about 30 minutes away, and I’d love to be of any help if you need it, just let me know. Best way to get in touch is probably email:

      1. No worries, I can only imagine how frustrating it can be to try to coordinate meeting up with anybody on the trail! Just know I’m here if you need anything in the NEast portion, a tent pole or buckle or place to sleep or really anything!
