I am off the the trail due to rain. 😕 Boy, did I need this Zero! The past few days have been very tough for me on all levels-physically, mentally and emotionally.
This motel does not smell like stale cigarette smoke, (that is the one thing I can’t deal with!) I have to wait 5 minutes before the hot water reaches my room, (at least when it’s hot, it’s HOT- especially when someone in another room flushes!) I have to sit out on the picnic table in front of the motel to use the WiFi (at least it’s covered, and at least they have WiFi!) my cell service here is bad, and the calls to Bud keep disconnecting. The dryer was broken, so they had to line dry my clothes (I don’t think they charged me for doing it, and I can’t tell you how glad I am to have clean clothes!) There are some cobwebs and dust in my room, and hairs on the walls of the shower, (but I’m pretty sure the sheets are clean). The handle on the toilet is broken (at least it still flushes.) The decor is probably from the 90’s ( I don’t care about that as long as things are clean.) The AC works. When I arrived, the lady working the desk gave me some ice in a ziplock, and a cold bottle of water when I told her I was dehydrated and not thinking well. The owner lied to me about picking me up from the trail. I paid $12 for a shuttle to take me about 3-4 miles. This room is WAY overpriced! Everything is so expensive here in the Northeast! Most water sources have been dry in NY, even thought they are listed as being ‘reliable ‘. NY is full of PUDS ( pointless ups and downs) which really take a lot of energy. My pack has been heavy with 5-6 days worth of food. As I lose weight, I should be carrying less. Pack weight is only supposed to be 1/4 of your body weight. Last I weighed I was 113. With lots of food and extra water, I think my pack is probably about 30-35 pounds. Too heavy! I’m sure I’ve lost more since my last weigh-in, because my face is looking gaunt. I’ve lost almost all of the fat at my waist, so that will probably speed up the weight loss. They say we burn about 5,00-6,000 calories out here. Not sure if that is true or not.
I’ve had several cries since arriving at the Bates Motel. 😳 I’m not sure why. I’ve felt a bit like I did toward the end of my hike in 2016. I think a lot of it is nutritional, but I think some of it is emotional stress, not to mention the physical exertion. I could really use a prayer or two if you feel so inclined.
I arrived here yesterday after an almost 20 mile day. I don’t handle big days like that very well. Lack of water, opportunity for real food, shelter from rain, and other things drive most of my Big days.
I slept well last night. It’s raining right now, and it’s supposed to rain the next 3-4 days, today being the worst. I’ll be leaving tomorrow, come hell or high water. I have a maildrop in Salisbury, CT, in several days, and will stay overnight (after a full day) there. Not sure if I’ll Zero. Today’s zero was more of a ‘mental and emotional health day’ but I needed it physically and wanted to avoid the worst of the rain.
I’ll try to get in another post, but it might just be a picture dump.
(If you look really closely in the pic above, you can see the sun glinting off the NYC skyline. It’s barely visible. I camped on this mountain, and the afternoon before, it was just gray shapes that you had to strain to see. Those who stayed up until dark said they could see the lights from NYC well. I’ve heard that hikers in 2001 could see the World Trade Center burning from this mountain.)
I have prayed for you! I hope things will look better soon. Try to get some extra salt and load up with fluids before you move on. Be careful!

You know what they say gal, “who has more fun than us”?! Sorry to hear that your room wasn’t quite up to the Motel 6 standard. One thing I’m learning in my more ‘mature’ days; sometimes a good cry can be a good thing. Looks like that noreastern thing is going to keep it wet for a little while. May our Lord send His righteousness before you!

I agree. I think crying helps, too! …at least the rain fills up the springs and streams!

Thanks for letting me know you can see it! It’s difficult to tell what my pics look like on this phone! It was neat to see it in person.

It makes me worried that you’re losing weight so fast.
I don’t know if you’re anything like me. When I get too tired, I cannot eat. I try to eat anyway.
At the very least, drink water.
That is my advice to you. Try to eat a little here and there even if you don’t feel like it. And, eat more than just your meals if you can. At the very least, try to drink water. I drink Gatorade when I’ve sweated tons.
I’ll be praying that all things look up for you soon.

Thank you for your prayers and the advice. You are right. I’m having trouble with lunch. That is when I am in the thick of my exercise and when I am the hottest! I’m trying to drink Gatorade before my Coke when I get into town.

I’m sending you all the good and positive thoughts and energy (my way of praying). I’m glad you survived that motel. I chuckled a bit when I read Bates Motel. The point was you were out of the rain for a day. I know it has been bad and hope you’re doing okay. Eat. I know my daughter doesn’t like to eat when she gets really tired but I make her if she needs it – especially things with carbs and protein. *hug* You’re doing fantastic!!!

Thank you, Jennifer. I’m trying. I know you are right. It’s easy when I am in town. Not so easy when I’m hot and sweaty and I’m facing a dehydrated meal. I am trying though…I’m just burning so many calories it’s hard to get them all in.

I’m praying Kara. This all sounds rough. I’m sorry you feel so run down and emotional. I believe in crying. It’s definitely a release. You will get through this. I know you don’t like this motel. I’m praying for comfortable one. Maybe take 2 zeros and recoup. I love you. Jesus is with you. ❤ Liz

Lots of prayers being sent your way! I’m so sorry you’re having a rough patch. Glad you could rest a bit. I hope you can eat some pretty dense calories to keep your weight up, and I hope you can stay more hydrated, too. All a balance.

Thanks, Helen. With all the rain, the water sources seem to be doing better! That’s one blessing with all this rain!

Kara, I was praying for you even as I was hiking and praying for me this past weekend! I am amazed how our Lord answers sincere prayers. He is with you, always.
My back still did the tighten up, not as bad as the April long hike, but close. Gonna have to look at somehow losing pack weight, etc.
I also find it very difficult to eat a lunch when in stride mode, especially when weather does not ideal for a pack-off break. Hugs 🤗 and prayers 👏-data

Thanks for your prayers and for the update on your hike! Sorry to hear your back is still tightening up. Have you experimented with rearranging how you pack your backpack? Someone reminded me recently about putting my food bag up and down, and stuffing my tent on either side. I had been laying it flat side to side because it’s so large! Doing it the up and down way really helped the way the pack carries! It took the pressure of my lower back and shoulders. It’s worth a try to experiment! Sounds like you had rain too, if you had to eat on the go.😕
