I’m at a hostel. My hike today was to have a 60 % chance of rain with a high of 46 with a low of 33. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph. My body is sore. The muscles around my knee are sore. I am tired. Not training as much beforehand is really taking a toll on my body.
The hostel has a free all-you-can-eat cereal and coffee breakfast. I had two big bowls of Cheerios. My ‘hiker hunger’ has kicked in early this time. Food only sticks with me a couple of hours, even when I eat protein.
It took 2 1/2 cups of coffee before the brain fog lifted this morning. When I first came in at 7:00 a.m., they asked if anyone was staying over. They only had 8 bunks left. I told them I would let them know after breakfast. She strongly urged me to decide THEN, as they might be gone if I waited. I went for it. 20 minutes later she announced that they only had 2 bunks left.
Don’t give up on me. Though I’m breaking my rules about fewer zeroes in the beginning, I’m still ahead of where I was when I started last time since I started later then.
The people at this hostel have been very nice and helpful. One guy talked to me about my knee. It feels like it is a muscle above and below my knee in the back of my thigh and calf is injured. It is causing the area of my knee to hurt later in the day and going downhill. It often hurts the worst after I have set up my tent and I’m going for water without my pack (which is often downhill.) The guy here said that since it is not swelling, it is probably just a tear or a pulled muscle and it needs rest to heal.
All of the workers here are past thru hikers. I also have to mention that the place is very clean and nice. They gave us scrubs to wear while they did our laundry. Everyone who took the shuttle to town for supper was wearing scrubs. They told us the people in town were use to seeing hikers in scrubs. The guy at the grocery store check-out asked me if I was a hiker. I asked him how he knew, and he said we had a certain look about us and that we all carried those zippered change purses.😂 Its true!
I wanted to post a very scary picture. I look like a monstrosity. Yes. I do have some wrinkles at home, but not like this. This is an aberration. You should feel privileged that I would show you such a hideous picture. In my humble opinion, this proves I did the right thing in staying here another day. I’m in bad shape, I tell ya! My face is really swollen and I have bags under my eyes. I think it is the grains I’ve been eating. At home, I don’t eat grains at all. Though I’m trying to avoid gluten; rice, oats and gluten free pasta are probably about 50% of my diet out here. Its unavoidable out here, even when you dehydrate your own food, because grains are calories and filler. I am avoiding most sugar, except when I am offered a free soda. Nothing goes down so good as a soda when you first come off the trail.
I met Kudzu on the way into town. We had a lot in common, but she indicated that she is hiking alone. I get it. People don’t want a ‘clinger,’ but honestly…I don’t want to cling, and I don’t like clingers, either.
As an introvert, I form relationships cautiously, but once I make a friend, I’m very loyal…unless that person betrays my trust or good nature. Then I’m outta there with no looking back. Hasta La Vista, Baby! It takes a lot to earn my trust back. If they indicate They don’t want me around…buhbye! Im outta there! Who wants to be a pest? Not me. This is why I hiked alone last time.
I don’t do polite chit chat or casual relationships very well, so I don’t do these casual trail relationships very well. They leave me feeling like I’ve just eaten cotton candy. Sweet, but no substance. Don’t get me wrong- I’ve met a lot of really nice people on the trail and I have already talked to many more people than last time. I just don’t open up and trust people easily. Kudzu and Soap Spot left without saying goodbye.
On a positive note, a sweet little girl who is thru hiking the trail with her family sat down beside me in the lobby and started talking to me. She was probably about 8 years old. She had hurt her knee, too. That was the highlight of my morning and totally unexpected. I wanted to cry. (Yep, Mrs. Crybaby again.) Children are so open and innocent and non-judgmental.
I hope you don’t mind if I have therapy on my blog once in a while. Even Kudzu mentioned she has been more emotional while on the trail. I find this to be very true.
I got my camp shoes in my mail drop here. I had ordered them online before I left and they didn’t arrive before I got on the trail. They are Skechers Goga Max, and they only weigh 5 oz. I love them!

Thank you, Kathy! I always appreciate getting confirmation that I’ve made the right decision. On the few days I have hiked my precious ‘bat out of hell’ pace, my feet and legs have hurt. That confirms that slowing down is helping!

The hostel looks very nice. You can warm up and rest your leg. How about getting some Epsom salts? Do they have a bathtub? Hopefully some warmer weather is coming soon! Praying for your safety and a quick improvement in your condition. Stay strong and make wise decisions. Love and Gods spread along your journey.

Unfortunately, just a shower here, but lots of water pressure and hot water! I’ve had two showers so far. Showers and being clean are the things I most miss while on the trail. Thx for your prayers and encouragement.

I don’t think you can ever replicate an experience exactly. Circumstances change. It sounds like you’ve got lots of positives along with your challenges. Thanks for sharing all of it.

Yeah…and I definitely don’t want to replicate a lot of my last hike. I do want to focus on the positive if I can, it yeah…I also want to keep it real. I e read too many trail journals of people who portray this adventure in an unrealistic way (IMHO). Thx for your comment!

😂 I love that idea. These are smart wool socks. They prevent blisters and help with the stank. They also last a long time and dry quickly. 😊

oh but Kara! I love that you shared the picture. You look so much at peace compared to last time. I often thought you looked both happy and stressed. But now, just peace and happy.

Slow and steady. I’ve been watching the weather. It seems one system after another is rolling up the trail. Use it to your advantage to rest your body. I will keep you and all the hikers in my prayers. I love your honesty and openess. Be safe out there.

Rebound, let Spring catch up with you and rest your knee while you can. I begin my LASH on April 2nd and am having to pack with winter gear, which is what I didn’t want to do. Stay warm, maybe I will see you on the Trail. I am known as “data” amongst the hikers.

I have completed the AT up to Massie Gap in the Grayson Highlands SP. So I will begin there next week and hike to Rockfish Gap. I did the Shenandoah NP last year. I want to thru hike but husband doesn’t understand why I would want repeat all those miles.

Greetings Appalachian Sojourn, I began my hike as planned on 4/02 at Massie Gap in Grayson Highlands. Within 4 days my back would tighten up and become uncomfortable. Made it to Atkins and had a meal at the Red Barn only to become throwing up sick 24 hrs later. This put me out of commission for 2+ days at a local hostel. While there I met with a massage therapist in Marion to try and give my back some relief. I ended up in a hotel for another 2 days soaking in epsom salt baths. This is NOT what I had in mind for my LASH. Back on the trail and only 4 hours up the trail, my back spammed to the point I went into a fetal position in the middle of the trail, crying with tears in pain. Set up tent and crawled in, laying on my back. Next day hiked to another hostel, etc. Anyway, with the cold, wet weather in addition to my physical illnesses, I finally decided after 64 miles to come home and regroup on 4/15. I was and am so discouraged. Lots of prayers for you and me! My back is better but have a pinched nerve now that is effecting use of my arm & hand, ugh.

Oh no! What a nightmare! 😦 (Remind me not to eat at the Red Barn when I pick up my mail drop there!) I can only imagine how disappointed you must have been that your hike ended this way! …but I’m glad you are at least feeling better enough that you are going to get back on the trail and try it again. Definitely sending some prayers your way, and I hope the second half of your LASH is much more pleasant than your first half! I’m also hoping for some warmer and nicer weather for you up there!

Kara, which hostel are you at? I just got back from doing trail magic for the weekend. Saw the tornado damage from last week. It was bad. I’m glad you went into a hostel at that time. I drove a few hikers into town and they were surprised at the damage. It was very near the trail. Saw many cool hikers one was Renegade. She is a triple crowner hiking with insulin as she is diabetic. Very intetesting woman. Let me know where you are at. We shuttled many hikers in to town as they were soaked and it was cold.

I didn’t know about the tornado, but have seen SO much tree damage from the hurricane last season. The campsite you and I stayed at (Lance Creek) was just heart breaking!

Rebound, you do look at peace and happy. Thank you for openly sharing your journey. I know gluten can give you a hard time if you haven’t been used to eating it. I’m praying your body adjusts and your knee muscles heal quickly. BTW, my face and hands and legs often swell for a while when I’m on the trail. Takes my body a while to adjust to everything. Thank you for your writing and your thoughts! I eagerly read every post.
